Gathering Information and Effectively Conducting Interviews

Course Overview

The art of communication is important in every walk of life. It is a vital skill for every officer in law enforcement. This skill is one of the least practiced skills in law enforcement. The art of interviewing and interrogating is an intrinsic skill that every officer should have and practice. This skill is vital in every facet of the law enforcement career, whether it is a roadside interview, field interview, or obtaining a confession that could ultimately lead to success in a big case. It is also essential in obtaining information from a witness on a suspect.

This class is designed with the student in mind. It will consist of both classroom instruction and practical exercises, so the students can practice and fine tune their skills in the art of interviews and interrogations, in a controlled environment. Students will be able to hear and observe numerous previous interviews and interrogations. Topics of discussion will include information gathering, legal considerations, interview aspects, interrogation aspects, proxemics, non-verbal cues/body language, settings, rapport building, situational dos, and don’ts, interviewing witnesses versus suspects.

This course is designed for any law enforcement investigator or detective looking to learn/refresh their interviewing/interrogating techniques.

Students should bring a laptop with Internet capabilities.

John Sheehan Jr.

Detective John Sheehan has been employed with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office since the year 2000. Detective Sheehan has worked in the field of Narcotics Enforcement since the year 2004. During this time, Detective Sheehan has worked with local and Federal Task Forces. Detective Sheehan has specialized in the field of Parcel Interdiction. Detective Sheehan has been assigned as the primary investigator and assisted on cases involving Drug Trafficking Organizations, as well as Street-Level, Gang-Related Drug Trafficking Organizations. As such, Detective Sheehan has initiated and/or participated in investigations involving the organized distribution of illegal drugs and money laundering offenses and has initiated/participated in numerous arrests for drug-related offenses. Detective Sheehan has conducted/participated in surveillance, the writing of and execution of search warrants, the operation and debriefing of informants, has reviewed taped conversations relating to drug transactions and has experience in the use of drug code and cryptic language. Through his extensive training, education, and experience, Detective Sheehan has become an expert on the way illegal drugs are transported, stored, and distributed and the methods of payment for such drugs.

Detective Sheehan is a distinguished member of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. In 2005, Detective Sheehan was selected as Deputy of the Year for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Detective Sheehan has earned the Medal of Exceptional Service for the years of 2005, 2013, and 2020. In 2016, Detective Sheehan was a member of the Appalachia HIDTA Parcel Interdiction Unit, and the unit was selected as the Task Force of the Year. In 2020, Detective Sheehan was selected as the recipient of the Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Award for the Narcotics Officer of the Year. Detective Sheehan is a member of many organizations, including the INIA (International Narcotics Interdiction Association) and the KNOA (Kentucky Narcotics Officers Association). In 2019, Detective Sheehan was selected as an executive board member for the KNOA.

Detective Sheehan lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his family.
