Course Overview
Microsoft Excel® for Public Safety™ is designed to help public safety personnel best utilize Microsoft Excel ® to successfully manage law enforcement specific data. Whether it is case specific data (e.g. telephone tolls, financials) or agency-wide data (e.g. arrest stats, fugitive lists, calls for service), it can be analyzed with just a few clicks using this powerful tool!
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for law enforcement personnel, which includes: any sworn officer, support staff, administrative personnel, Supervisors and Management. Attendees need only a basic understanding of computers and Excel®. No technical or analytical background is required.
Material Requirements
Students should bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel (version 2003 or higher). Additional materials (data sets) will be provided to students.
Agenda
Day One
- Uses in Law Enforcement - Telephone tolls; Financial analyses; Agency stats
- Navigation & Manipulation - Rows, columns, cells, ranges, worksheets
- Tools - Autofill, conditional formatting
- Simple formulas - Sum, Average, Median, Mode, Crime Rate and more
- Complex formulas - Date conversion to days of week, months of year
- Concatenating - Combining data stored separately

Day Two
- Parsing - Separating data using Text to Columns
- Best Charting practices - Bar, columnar, and pie chart usage; proper use of data labels, legends, gridlines etc.
- Why you should never chart in 3-D
- Importing/Exporting - Linking data between products
- Data Validation - Creating pull-down lists to give forced options
- The three analytical tools you must know - Sorting, filtering, & the magic of Pivot Tables

Day Three (Optional)
1. Hands On Activities – Attendees develop their own materials in a structured hands-on environment.
2. Custom Development – Attendees work with instructor on existing case materials in need of support.
Metre Lewis
Metre Lewis has been working in law enforcement in Florida since 1984. She has served as a Crime Analyst with the Orlando, Melbourne, and currently Kissimmee Police departments. Metre has a passion for analysis. She feels analysis is the key to modern policing. Metre says that “any law enforcement agency that plans to take a proactive posture must have a clear understanding of crime analysis, and its role in 21st century policing.”
Ms. Lewis also has a passion for analysts. During a training class hosted by Indian River County Sheriff’s office given by the Alpha Group, Metre had a vision. The vision involved the promotion of analysis in law enforcement. Metre’s dream was to have analysts of all disciplines be it crime, intelligence, investigative and strategic come together for information sharing and training. Finally, her vision also involved a credentialing process for analysts within the state of Florida. Her vision took on the form of the Florida Crime and Intelligence Analysts Association, Inc. which started in 1995 and is currently celebrating 23 years of service to the analytical community. Ms. Lewis served as President, Vice President of Training and Treasurer for FCIAA, Inc.
Ms. Lewis received her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University and her graduate degree from Tiffin University. Metre is also a Certified Crime Analyst through the Florida Crime and Intelligence Analysts Association, Inc. and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Ms. Lewis has served as an instructor for FCIAA and a presenter at the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA).
