Harnessing the Power of Microsoft Excel® for Data Mapping
Course Overview
Who knew that Microsoft Excel could aid law enforcement operations in mapping burglaries, homicides, cell phone records, and other data? After this two-day course, you will be equipped with the skills necessary to visually map tactical, strategic, and operational analysis data. Microsoft Excel is a free resource equipped on almost every computer used for professional duties. This makes the mapping feature in Excel one of the most valuable tools law enforcement personnel can use for their tasks. By the end of this course, you’ll know how to organize your data for geographical use, import the data to a map, and build the map to represent your data best visually.
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for law enforcement personnel, which includes: any sworn officer, support staff, administrative personnel, Supervisors and Management. Attendees need a basic to intermediate understanding of computers and Excel®. No technical or analytical background is required.
Material Requirements
Students should bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel (version 2003 or higher). Additional materials (data sets) will be provided to students.

- Knowing Your Data – Does it need a clean? What’s in the box?
- Microsoft Excel Map Commands – Navigation of most used buttons
- Importing Your Data onto a Blank Map – Going from just data to locations

- Building the Map – Visualizing your data geographically
- Timeline Feature – Visualizing your data geographically across time
- Heat Maps – What’s hot and cold and what does this mean
- Custom Regions – Importing .kml or .shp files to display

Nicole McKendree
Nicole McKendree began her career in law enforcement in 2016 as a Patrol Officer. Mrs. McKendree pursued a higher degree focused in analytics and criminology and started the very first Crime Analyst program at the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office in Arkansas. After building the program for nearly 2 years, Mrs. McKendree moved on to the Arkansas State Fusion Center as a Senior Intelligence Analyst where she was tasked with a myriad of duties all in assistance to local, state, federal, and tribal/territorial law enforcement. After a military move to Georgia, Mrs. McKendree obtained a Criminal Intelligence Analyst position with the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
Mrs. McKendree currently assists Georgia law enforcement agencies in criminal cases ranging from theft to homicide. She provides expertise in use of resources such as facial recognition, financial record analysis, property records, and more. Mrs. McKendree has specialized in Domestic Violent Extremism during her time at the fusion center, writing an intelligence product in collaboration with DHS that gained her recognition from the United States Secretary of Homeland Security. She was awarded the Southern Shield 2022 Fusion Center Analysis Award in October 2022 and holds several certifications in programs such as i2 Analyst Notebook, Crime Analysis, and Counterintelligence/Counterterrorism. She is avid in furthering professional advancement of her peers through teaching analysis courses and directed advice on law enforcement resources and training.
Mrs. McKendree lives in Georgia with her husband, son, and senior German Shepherd Dog.
